The music which would have been beautiful if put to a rich period theme, became too sharp and annoying while trying to pursue deeper meaning of the painter's madness. The layers of dialogue were almost amateurish in trying to portray the character's level of madness. The "vaseline effect" to muddle the bottom half of the viewer's vision was extremely irritating. The acting was good with a stand out performance by Mads Mikkelsen. I had hoped to see a portrayal of the artist's supposed view of the stars while he painted my favourite piece but in the end I discovered that the story here was what was "supposed". Kudos to the fact that Dafoe studied the strokes of Van Gogh.
