TLDR: fun to see old faces again, but pretty flaccid movie that will probably leave most matrix fans disappointed. I found it mildly enjoyable as a film when considered in a vacuum, but hated it as an installment in the matrix series. I’ll admit the task of rejuvenating the existing plot line with Neo and Trinity (Keanu and Moss were great) was probably impossible to pull off in a sensical way. Regardless, what they really managed to do was trivialize the plot of the first three for a handful of cheap throwback moments and some mediocre action sequences. When compared to its predecessors, which were filmed decades ago, the fights come off as less refined and seemed sloppier/slower than what we’d expect from the matrix. The plot elements they introduced were thought provoking at times, but at others just didn’t make sense or were complete nonsense even within the context of a universe where impossible things happen. This removes much of the gravitas the other movies built up and leaves the viewer underwhelmed. Not upset I watched it, but not sure I’ll be able to make myself care about the next one.
