I had really high expectations of the game but I was underwhelmed. I’ve put around 25 hours into this game, where I initially was enjoying it at the start of the game, but it slowly falls off as progression goes on.
The good:
- Combat in general (not including performance issues on the ps5 yet), I played as archer, warrior and thief and had lots of fun with it. There were times where I would phase through giant monsters when grabbing onto them but overall was fun, especially against regular sized opponents.
- Exploration, I did enjoy exploring the world for a while, at the start I avoided exploring at night, but it gave the game another dimension and made it even more fun in my opinion. I still think there’s a lot to explore as well.
- Pawns, I thought the pawns were great, even though they do seem to repeat the same lines as well, they do add another dimension to this game. I did not play the first dragons dogma so this was fairly new to me, and having the addition of npcs helping you directly in combat was really fun.
The bad:
- Civilisations and cities. They just feel dead, the majority of NPC’s look the same and for some reason keep fading away and disappearing in view, they keep repeating the same lines as well with and it’s like the npcs that attempt to converse with one another just makes zero sense, as if to just throw chatter into the game. There’s no personality to any of them and it ruins the immersion. Npcs seem to not care when you go into there house and take stuff from there chests, tables etc and even in the quests that supposedly require stealth the npcs don’t seem to have the ai capacity for it. It felt like this game wasn’t made for the stealth aspect of it.
- Frame rate and performance issues, I played on ps5 and once I got to one of the cities, the frame rate and performance will drop significantly and the game would be really choppy. Not to mention how bad it can get in combat as well especially if you have a magic user as one of your pawns. This was the reason I went to archer as well, to try and avoid being in the middle of any sort of spell in hopes that it wouldn’t hinder the frame rate.
Ultimately as much as I thought the combat was great, the performance issues really ruin it. At the very least if I’m spending a good amount of money on a game I would like to be given the ability to reduce some of the graphics to improve the performance or have a performance option as the bare minimum.
The dead cities and disappearing npcs also don’t help at all with the immersion.
There are some other things too such as the inventory system, armour system, but these are all expected and are good enough for a modern game. The character customisation was also in real high depth as well. If only the NPCs had the same amount of creativity put into them then it would
