I purchased a hardback edition in 1987; still have it. Purchased another online for a friend. An engaging, non-fatiguing read. A fact-filled 1,100 page peek into the machinations inside the Lincoln administration. Written as a novel with a few interwoven fictional subplots. Safire was rightly commended for his unrivaled research and ability to create this monumental work.
