Orwell apparently referred to this novel as "tripe"! I can't understand why. I've only read a third of it and - though endlessly depressing - it's been fascinating reading! He was a extremely talented writer! I find myself wondering if Orwell wasn't pressured - perhaps by gov't agents acting in response to Church of England complaints about the novel - to give a thumbs-down to his own novel! You'd understand what I mean if you've ever had a private conversation with angry police officers! They can be extraordinarily persuasive!
