Fantastic game and one of the best retro-inspired titles I’ve played. I found the music, visual style, pacing, and humor to all be top-notch.
However, the best part of this game for me was the control scheme; your Messenger handles like high-performance machine. Once the entire moveset is obtained, the bulk of the game will enable (and require) you to perform really cool feats of dexterity through a daunting array of traps, deadly environments, and monsters. You will die a lot, but I almost always had the feeling that the death was deserved since I knew what I needed to do and had the tools to do it.
The penalties for death are minimal too, so your time is mostly spent learning a deathtrap or boss until you triumph, rather than repeating long segments or running out of lives and restarting. I was never bored and looked forward to each new ability, environment, clever joke, or really fun boss fight.
My hat is off to the developers; this is retro-inspired gaming done right. Ditch the outdated baggage, keep the style and challenge, refine the core elements, then add enough new substance to make it seem new again. Thanks for this great game!
