I loved this game. From the music, to the writing of the four main characters, to the visuals, to the story. The story perhaps wasn't what it could have been, and some characters certainly didn't get enough time on screen, and thus story points involving them felt hollow and pointless.
But where the game really, truly shined was the four main characters. Noctis, Gladiolus, Ignis, and Prompto. The character development between these four is excellent, and it's hard not to feel for any of them. I got angry at them during a certain part, I felt sad with them. I felt what they felt, and it really brought me into the world as a part of what was happening, even if it was as a silent watcher due to the linearity of the story. But a linear story isn't necessarily a bad thing.
The gameplay is solid if frustrating at times, and I speak specifically of the dungeons you go into. Some of them are downright unfair and do require you to go out and grind for a while to make things a bit easier to handle; or like me, bash your head against it until you win through sheer force of will and then not touch the game for a week.
The final part of the game is truly the weakest, but I won't go into why. It just falls short of what gets built up for so long, and misses out on a great deal of opportunity.
All-in-all, this was a good game that I was happy to put quite a few hours into, so definitely look into it, especially if it's on sale.
