As I'm from Inverness and actually lived in Kinmylies whilst Karen was at Charleston (best chippy and Chinese in town next to her old school btw), I decided to stump up £5.49 to 'rent' this movie from Amazon, mainly so I could 'snech spot' locations.
Please be aware it's absolutely not the light and fluffy laugh a minute observational comedy about Highland 20 somethings depicted in the trailer.
It's core theme is the horrific suicide rate in the Highlands told via the central characters relationship with her recently deceased 'gay best friend'.
To be fair it's depiction of the lost souls drowning their sorrows every weekend in Inverness whatever the motivation is pretty spot on, even if the walks of shame make no local geographic sense and my best laugh was the 'brigadoon' style fake Inverness railway station.
This was also ironic given the supposed fight to keep the film out of the central belt.
The overall pacing was a bit pedestrian and the decision to limit dialogue was a mistake because KG had actually pulled in some solid acting talent who were woefully underused to the point of being cameos.
The main disappointment being that when there was dialogue, like in the cringe scene at work with her boss, it was clear that Karen does have a gift for writing and the pitch black humour that was largely lacking otherwise.
Nice to see (All be it blink and you'll miss her) Daniela Nardini again. A cute bit of casting could have been using her as the mother, to hint at the possible failed aspirations of her 'This Life' character.
Regardless, I did get what KG was trying to convey and I liked the emotional honesty of it all, however it just meandered along in ever decreasing circles with no real punch despite the edgy themes being explored.
Still worth a look for KG fans & locals, as well as hinting at directorial potential to come.
