I can't think of another book to recommend other than this one. the boy and the old man have a stellar dynamic and the semantic field and repetition of the sea absolutely amazed me. I didn't think such a short book could change my life. I went from homeless to living in my mum's basement with a job fishing. I love Hemmingway, I'm currently writing a novel based on the old man and the sea it's intended as a sequel to the old man and the sea and it's called " the old seamen". It takes place Atlantic when the boy has grown up and in the end, they both end up catching an even bigger fish than the one in the original. EDIT: after reading it 5 more times I've now become a millionaire selling fish and have franchised my fish and chip across the nation of Cuba. I've received multiple Michelin stars for each of the establishments and I've never had a review lower than 4 stars. Hemmingway states there was no symbols or deeper meanings within the book. au contraire monsieur although you didn't intend it you subconsciously drove several parallels to Shakespeare, Micheal Morpurgo, doctor Seuss and numerous others. As well as, the great philosophers Plato, Kant, St Thomas Aquinas and Beetlejuice. EDIT 2: After a further 7 reads, totalling 13 times in total, I can feel my soul exiting my body and entering heaven. I have become an enlightened human being comparable to the terminator and I can feel my desire for global power rise. This book should be mandatory for all humans to read at least once a month for the rest of their lives. I shall devote millions to scientific research so that humans can live forever to devote more time to reading this incomprehensibly incredible piece of written literature. I speak only in quotes from this book when talking to other human beings (Which I do not do very often, as that would distract from reading, writing and studying this book. Even my birth mother does not talk to me anymore and sentenced me to the foster care system, however, she clearly does not see the same incredible writing that I do). I run the chip shop in Cuba from a laptop I stole in the basement of the foster care home, bringing in millions in revenue yearly. I would like to devote my life to constructing a theme park entirely themed around The Old Man and The Sea. We would have actors all genetically identical playing the old man and Santiago, and we would capture marlin and have people pay to attempt to catch them, similarly to the old man. EDIT 3: I will be undergoing facial reconstruction surgery to look like Ernest Hemingway himself. When I hit the ripe age of 60 I will shoot myself in the face with a shotgun to match my idol, and I will meet him in heaven and he will thank me for my work on earth recreating his masterpiece. St Peter himself will allow me through the gates and bow at my feet for the work I have done on earth. In heaven, I will sit at the head of the feast table and all present will talk about my work on earth. I will be crowned the new god, the bible will be replaced with the old man and the sea, and I will BECOME the old man.
