I loved the book which I thought to be a beautifully crafted and engaging human story that raged against the the treatment of women both as scientists and in the workplace and society more generally.
The television adaptation is a mess. A spurious story about a campaign against a proposed highway through the predominantly Black neighbourhood where Calvin chose to live is grafted on to Elizabeth's story. A pastor is made to say things which seem aimed to placate audiences who may object to Elizabeth's research into the origins of life. Why is Elizabeth's beloved daughter Mad abandoned either to her own devices at home when Elizabeth is presenting her show or to a childminder who is always asleep? In the book Harriet is a lonely neighbour who becomes Elizabeth's friend and devoted childminder, so it all works nicely. Finally why show cell division instead of chromosome division under the microscope when Calvin is talking about chromosome division in his lecture? GCSE science.
Fantastic production, sets, casting, costumes and acting and all the bits that are faithful to the original story are so good. If Apple wants to address other issues then they should make a separate series instead of ruining and diluting a powerful story in this way.
