The 2020 version strays a little bit too far from Daphne Du Maurier fabulous novel. Too many inaccuracies that bring nothing. Max de Winter is too close in age with the new Mrs de Winter. The book specifies that Max is at least 20 years older than his bride. And that she is shy and uncomfortable with who she is. The cold character of Mrs Danvers was magisterially interpreted by Anna Massey in the 1979 BBC series. Sadly Kristin Scott Thomas does not fully embrace the evil character described in the novel and the devotion/obsession she had for her previous mistress. This version also lacks addressing the heavy atmosphere and tension between the new Mrs de Winter and Mrs Danvers.
The faux pas of the dress during the ball is not accurate either. The dress was white and never of scarlet color. Max is never suspected of killing Rebecca nor arrested by the police, The coroner rules Rebecca's death a suicide. Last in the book, Mrs Danvers does not commit suicide by jumping in the cold waters. We suppose she perishes in the flames of Manderley that she herself has stricken to devastate the castle.
I would have preferred a more faithful reflection of the book.
