I wish I had found this gem of a movie sooner. When it comes to authoritarian controlled utopian/dystopian worlds, this is the most textured and nuanced films I have ever seen. Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult reveal immense passion and intensity without the need for nudity or gratuitous sex.
I can see elements of George Lucas' THX-1138 in this. But don't be fooled by the comparison. THX-1138 was experimental in nature and, although it had some interesting ideas, it was largely unfocused. This is the version of THX-1138 that only this team of filmmakers and actors could have brought to life and they did so by focusing on Silas and Nias journey of discovery and acceptance of their repressed desire for love. It's a story of their escape from a world where societal expectations go against the things that give humans purpose and meaning.
