I found this lacking any subtly in its overwrought themes of colonialism and racism are bad. This is 2023 and we aren't children so if you want to state the obvious don't use the greatest mystery writer of all times name to do it.
This abandoned the humanizing elements of Agathas work. It could have been a fresh take but it bludgeoned you with modern sensibilities rather than than adding a level of nuance to interactions, much as you find with the xenophobia poirot faced.
Other adaptations bring some camp and lets face it the plots were sometimes fully camp , but the themes, motives and stakes of christies were deeply personal, and human. Love, envy, revenge, they touched on wider topics but never lost that core. This pretends to convey deeper meaning, but it refuses to actually care enough to do it.
I could have watched our first two characters interact for the whole show, too bad the best actor died ten minutes in.
I'm off to watch suchet do it right.
