A few weeks ago, I stumbled across the series Anne with an e. I had not heard of it or seen any advertisements about it before and I was lucky to come across it just by chance. When I was young, I watched the series Anne of Green Gables with Megan Follows and I absolutely loved it. It was hilarious at times and so happy-go-lucky; for this new adaptation to live up to or surpass this series from my youth would be extremely difficult. Still, I decided to give this ‘new’ TV show a try, and I must admit that I was not disappointed — already after the first episode I was hooked. I watched an entire weekend straight until I finished the entire series.
This adaptation gives you another take on the books by Lucy Maud Montgomery. It feels much more contemporary and current, appealing more to its present-day audience. I also find it more realistic than the previous Anne of Green Gables series (do not get me wrong I loved that one too!). In this version you get a clearer picture of how harrowing Anne’s past has been and how that influences her present behaviour. Yes, it is a lot darker but that makes it only more truthful, more believable and certainly more gripping. That said, it still has the iconic slate smashing scene and many other wonderful, funny scenes that give you this warm, happy feeling inside while watching it. As the series advances, it goes off-track quite a bit and does not follow the book closely but that certainly does not make it less interesting to watch. The show tackles so many topics which are so relevant to our times: racism, inequality, racism, sexism, freedom of speech, sexual assault, LGBTQ+, first nations people etc.
There are so many more reasons why the show is great to watch, I will name but a few:
• Mrs Walley-Beckett, the show’s creator, has done such an impressive job, making it engaging from beginning to end.
• The actors all give stellar performances. There seems to be a real bond of friendship between all the actors, and I think they were all perfectly cast for their roles.
• It is perfectly shot, displaying the emotions of all the characters beautifully.
I wholeheartedly recommend watching this series and hope that even though it is currently (weirdly enough) cancelled, they will reconsider and bring it back soon!
