This is a weird, haunting yet hilarious, terrifying yet endearing, juvenile yet mature, masterpiece for the ages.
Technically, this film is a pure work of art. Shot without color in a nearly square aspect ratio gives the viewer a cramped experience devoid of joy. This is not a feel-good film. Nor is it a tidy cohesively packaged narrative. There are single-take colloquial monologues, noir scenes, horrifying images, and mythic flashes worth spending time to think about. As viewers, salvation resides in our best attempts to piece it together despite knowing that it is always uncomfortable to watch people descend into madness and self-destruction.
