(Spoilers)
Honest to god this movie was an extreme disappointment. The story lacks a lot of exploring from its foundation in that: The girl has abilities (not explained) she uses to clue together where Finn could be. Her mom had the same ability (doesn’t expand onto this either). No motives were given to the audience on the killer, which is odd since most kidnapping films include a motive for the perpetrators.
The story doesn’t explain why The Grabber 1. Doesn’t take the phone off the wall even though it’s a clear weapon (some may say the black phone is a way to highlight his guilt and fear of hearing from the kids but that is not at all leaned towards in the movie), 2. Why he’s able to hear the phone ring, 3. Doesn’t explain ANYTHING about The Grabber he simply kidnaps kids and kills them? No backstory? The black balloons? His brother (Pointless character)? Does he just kill the children? Do anything else to them? Why does he want to set Finn free, just because he doesn’t play “Naughty Boy” with him?
Also for some odd reason the detectives all of a sudden (towards the end) lean on the word of this girl they had visited towards the beginning of the story. That’s great.
The mother just… kills herself? Did her powers drive her to do that? Why? What did she used to see?
Also I’m convinced the mask is a way to hide the grabbers shame he’s had for killing his victims. Especially since he freaks out when it’s taken off and it’s usually the frowning, upset mask. Which makes me think, why does he have the creepy smiling one in the beginning? Is it just to feed off the ominous vibe Ethan Hawke is trying to deliver?
Honestly the plot points and characters are there, just seemed EXTREMELY unfinished. The concept of this movie was very very stretched thin, not expanded at ALL.
