Watched RISE OF SKYWALKER - After introducing a variety of new & interesting characters, situations, plot twists and couplings (Finn and Rose) in THE LAST JEDI, fans were expecting a bold new story that would tie up all these loosely introduced and explored lines to take the story to a defining standpoint that would shape the way fans view the end of this third trilogy for generations to come.
Unfortunately, Abrams opted to give all those character development possibilities the back seat, to allow a familiar and predictable type of story arc to play out without any other distractions.
Finn & Rose's blossoming romance seems to have been cut as a one-off mistake, DJ (played by Benicio Del Toro) along with a bunch of other memorable characters is absent from this production. But they seemed to have been sidelined by the inclusion of old favourites.
The movie seems to be a hodgepodge of great and not so great moments which all culminates in an ending that is and can only be viewed as a signature Star Wars conclusion.
Of clear confusion was Palpatine's sudden arrival and mentioning Rey as his granddaughter, making me wonder which baffling conception scene I had missed from which movie in the ever perplexing and very secretive 'who's been in bed with who' star wars lore.
One additional gripe I had with the movie was this secret Sith Planet that they went on about and how they could only get there using a Sith Navigator. When they finally got there, they showed a dark arena type venue with thousands of cloaked figures revering Palpatine in the Dark. They didn't bother showing anything more about the Sith culture, no new Sith lords, weapons, technologies etc. A waste of an idea that could have been explored really well.
All in all, ROSW was a bit of a disappointment because there was no sense of continuity, there were many loose ends and plot holes that the director chose to mask and ignore, the whole thing felt like a 'could've, would've, should've BUT DIDN'T' project - Same old, rancid ideas - 7/10
