I found The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis lacking in engagement throughout the story. While the main character, Parvana, had nice moments, I didn’t feel a strong connection to her overall. The writing style was somewhat appealing, but some parts didn’t make much sense. While the book introduced me to some new and important ideas, they didn’t leave a lasting impact on me. I might recommend this book to others, but only to those interested in exploring different cultures and perspectives.
One part of the story that stood out was when Parvana and Shauzia didn’t care about being seen as girls by others. Some moments showed their courage in a difficult situation, which I found somewhat interesting. However, I thought it was a bit odd that they had to take care of personal matters in public spaces, which are typically private. It seemed strange to me that they would be so unconcerned about it. One thing I liked was adding the Window Woman, however it was abruptly stopped.
The book’s setting and atmosphere didn’t help me feel a strong sense of the world they were in. In fact, I found the story somewhat inappropriate and... wrong, making it harder for me to connect with it. As for the ending, I found it unrealistic and useless, which left me unsatisfied. The themes didn’t resonate with me or make me think more deeply, but the message of the book was somewhat clear and expressed, although it was not my kind of book style or theme.
