I don’t like the 5 star rating system because this is an average 50/100 type movie. You can find other comments poking holes in the plot details or other things to do with the gravity of the situation the main character finds himself in but there are 2 main things that derail this movie.
******* POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD ******
The first issue is with the pacing, the movie spends an hour and 5 minutes or so just showing this man wallowing in his sorrow which is fine but that only leaves the film with 25 minutes to spin up some sort of conclusion to the story. This movie should have either been longer to accommodate a progression in the man’s life or cut out some of the unnecessary scenes during his more trying times. The second issue is the conclusion itself… there really isn’t one. I understand that not all movies need to have a perfect ending and I’ve tried to think through this one to see if I can fully appreciate it but it just feels rushed. The main character does improve and we see some progression with other important side characters but the movie ends with him in the first stage of possible improvement. Addiction is a recurring issue so there is no way to know whether the main character actually succeeds or not. They should have taken some time to work on the pacing of this film in order to accommodate a more complete progression and conclusion because when I was at 24 minutes left and still nowhere near a conclusion I knew there were going to be problems. This film is worth a watch just to see it but it’s not a masterpiece.
