Firstly I would like to say I absolutely love this film. It’s unique take on movie making was very enjoyable and didn’t fail to explore its beautiful Studio Ghibli style charm. However, I do have a few qualms. Admittedly, the opening half hour was difficult to follow, and a little too back and forth to really grasp the story, in my opinion. And throughout, there was a shortfall of suspense and pace displayed in many of the other films such as ‘Howl’s moving castle’ and ‘Kiki’s delivery service.’ BUT! If you are looking for an easy viewing film, with a genuinely interesting story and gentle themes, this might just be the one for you. Once again Studio Ghibli’s team has mastered the creation of beautiful scenery and a phenomenal musical score to emphasise it. The title of the film really does come to fruition as the story unravels. Once you get past the general idea of the film it really does make sense. The character growth through the film is very fulfilling and heartwarming. Many of the aspects are quite relatable (at least to me). While it certainly isn’t my favourite of their creations, it’s definitely not my least either. I would definitely recommend this film to anyone who enjoyed ‘Whisper of the Heart’ and ‘From Up On Poppy Hill.’
Thank you!
