This is genuinely such a great adaptation of the books. Where do I even begin?
1. Percy is just immaculate. Walker Scobell greatly captured his wit, charm, sass, goofiness, and nerdiness amazingly. That whole scene with the bathrooms was just such Percy dialogue. Not to even mention how lovely that scene was where he prays to his mom. They definitely captured the essence of Percy with even more qualities that just add to his character.
2. We have not seen too much of Annabeth yet, but so far I am intrigued. She seems to have that mysteriousness down well, and I do like this slightly different interpretation of her. I like how they did not make her as stand offish as she was in the books at first, but also capturing her as this direct, intelligent 12 year old. I think when we read the books we forget they are 12 years old and that we can see now how these qualities look on that age rather than just giving us the 20 year old tweens.
3. Grover is just absolutely amazing. That is a very difficult character to write and portray into a show. There was great risk of him becoming the next Jar Jar Binks and even in the books his awkward nerdiness hit on my nerves, but this is outstanding. They captured those dorky qualities without making him unbearable or having him be that character that makes you cover your ears. I was truly worried about how Grover would be as an on-screen character but this is was just absolute perfection.
4. Gabe’s portrayal is also something I love. I think in the first book we forget that Gabe and Sally are dating. Their relationship has to be believable and have some sort of chemistry otherwise he might as well be Percy’s man child brother. They captured his abuse and scumminess perfectly.
5. Sally Jackson shows great portrayal so far. Watching her I can definitely feel her love for Percy and I can really sense that mother son relationship.
7. Luke’s portrayal is also something I admire. In the books I didn’t really feel that betrayal as hard as I know I am going to later. The books didn’t have as great as a mentorship relationship I am seeing in this show. He is getting the perfect screen time with Percy because if they gave him the same they did in the books it would just feel like some guy who was nice to Percy joined the dark side.
This is just how I am feeling so far, but if it keeps going how it’s going then my expectations are going to be blown way more out of the water than they already are. Keep up the good work!
