The author of this fabulous book is Kai Cheng Thom .Changing the way how the world looks at a transgender is one of the most important motive of this book. It starts with the story of a white trans woman and the acceptance she receives after her surgery. The protagonist's(A dangerous transgirl ) memo, haunted and aggressive young girl runs away from a brutal city call gloom where the sky is always grey and finds herself in a magical place known as The Street of Miracles (The City of Smoke and Lightes) . This transgirl happens to be a Kung Fu expert and pathological liar . Then Thom writes and explains about the multiplicity of experiences of those who identify as transgender .
The protagonist enrolls herself in French classes .
Kimaya, the first friend the protagonist makes who herself is a trans woman who runs a social welfare which allows the other trans women to find their freedom and independence .By giving her characters jobs , desire and dreams , Thom is able to assert their manhood and how important is it for them to live ordinary simple and everyday life . At the same time the author also mentions about all the difficulties and issues they face. By using language that enables the life of Trans women , the author is able to show how the society's prejudices against them have flimsy grounds , and they are just as other common people around them .
After the death of one of their friends (Soraya) these fierce femmes form a vigilante group attacking men who violate their spaces , the city begins to feel threatened . Constant raids and attempts to find the leader of this group were made . Even when Kimaya refers the protagonist to Dr. Crocodile who gives free harmonial treatment , she makes it clear that such a surgery would come at a price . Though the price is never revealed when the protagonist visits the doctor , it is still made clear that those in power will attempt to subjugate trans women .
the protagonist as away from home used to write letters to her sister everytime she missed her. The protagonist writes about self harm and how she carries a silver pocket knife not to protect herself from others but to protect others from her . Because of her traumatic past the protagonist finds it difficult to navigate through consent , becoming violent instead of saying no when her personal space is violated . Because of this tendency of violence she is seen as fierce by the others the writer wanted her book to be effective and wanted people to get inspired and take action and that moment of time and I feel this book full of action is worth buying in reading . One of the things I liked in this book is that it makes us aware of those misdeeds that take place around us with most of the transgenders .
