I played this game with low expectations given how the game looks but my expectations were blown out of the water.
The battle system just screams paper Mario. Action commands are back and are as good as they were back in the thousand year door and 64. The music while battling never gets old.
Badges are back in the form of medals and they work just like they did in paper Mario. With a trio of characters now, the badges can have more variety. With so many badges you can equip on any party member, you can make a ton of team combinations.
I said trio of characters but, who are they? Well there is Kabbu the beetle, Vi the bee, and Lief the moth. They all have their own strengths and weaknesses in battle too. They also have their own backstory which is really well done.
The writing in this game is just fantastic. Every character has their own personality and you can tell what it is just by hearing how they talk.
The game’s graphics is really the only problem I have with this game. They just don’t look that good but given how fun this game is it really doesn’t matter that much.
There still is stuff I could say but that would involve spoilers for the story. Anyways I’m so happy I gave this game a try and it’s a must have for paper Mario fans that need more paper Mario!
