The movie reminded me of Imitation of Life, although the matriarch of the family, Neve, acknowledged her Blackness, she went above & beyond to perpetuate fitting into White society.
She hid her natural hair, practiced speaking, and was perturbed whenever her children attempted to embrace their Blackness.
It would have been interesting to get more details on her reason for abandoning her first set of children.
What I admired most was the exposure of covert racism. Excellent!
Additionally, Neve simply got out, whenever the task at hand became too difficult. This depicted what many people want to do, yet choose not to for the sake of obligatory norms.
