*Spoilers*
I come from an outside perspective, not seeing any of Jordon Peele's films in the past mainly due to the constant badgering of people claiming that his movies are revolutionary and he is the best director of our time. I understand that everyone has their own taste in movies but when it is jammed down my throat I kind of form a mental boycott to those films due to the constant hype. That being said, I put my own personal bias aside and decided to give this movie a chance due to my love of Extraterrestrials and UFO's. First things first I loved the portrayal of "Jean Jacket" and the effects used gave off an eerie and authentic UFO visual. One scene in particular that I thought was great was the cloud not moving on the camera, that was unique and gave off a sense of authenticity. That being said the ending with "Jean Jacket" was a bit ambiguous and the aliens face was very abstract, which I have mixed feelings on. The big pay off was a living Kite/Jellyfish which is not intimidating or frightening in the least. It basically looked liked the sails on a sail boat flying through the air and had no distinguishable features. I guess an Alien can look like anything so In this area I'll cut it some slack but in my personal opinion it had a poor design in the final scene.
Aside from the special affects and the scenes in which "Jean Jacket" is present those are the only positive aspects I would grant the film. The dialogue was obnoxious between the characters "Angel" and "Emerald" and over saturated the comedy relief trope of the film. In addition to the film in essence being a UFO "spoof" movie, there were also numerous plot holes that failed to give any justification to their screen time. For example "Did Jean Jacket have to do with the Gordy incident?" and "Why was the shoe standing straight up in the studio of the show", "What was the relationship between Jean Jacket and Jupe?". If these are symbolic or assumed relationships then they are not done in a convincing manner and are extremely vague. On a side note the artsy fartsy symbolism used nowadays is also getting a bit overplayed just like the one seen in the movie "midsummer" by Ari Aster. I still cant wrap my head around that movie being a symbolic representation of a break-up.
Overall The movie was not as bad as I thought it would be, but still managed to focus more on symbolism than the actual plot and climax of the movie so for that I still consider it not good. It may just be my personal opinion but movies, specifically Jordon Peele's Movies are starting to become more and more like some Avant-garde art display than a film designed to creep you out and make you afraid of the unknown. Hopefully "GET OUT" and "US" will be a little bit more suspenseful and not be a virtue signaling, thought-exercise like I've heard some people describe them. That being said I will give those films the same time of day as I have given "NOPE" and hopefully be proven wrong.
