MILD SPOILERS ALERT
I didn't think I would be writing this review but here I am. I fell in love with the pjo series and I've always been a big fan to all of uncle Rick's books. Look I was as excited for the series as the next pjo fan BUT this show just didn't cut it. Waaaait wasn't Rick Riordan himself involved in this? Now I kinda doubt it. Why? Cus they just didn't stay true to the books. And I'm not talking about the race swap cus I just don't care if the acting compensates for it(I mean, okay, they are just kids). I mean there are good stuff as well and it is MUCH MUCH better than the movies but it didn't meet my expectations. These are the stuff I was unhappy with:
1. Percy's character. I mean, Percy is supposed to sarcastic, sassy
,easygoing and chummy . In the series he looked so so serious and they tried to make him look too heroe-ey and not funny it just didn't seem right. I kept forgetting that he was percy. There is also a lack of general emotions. The reason I like the books are because of Uncle Rick's splash of humour. They can't just take it away!
2.The character of the Gods themselves. Hades seemed a bit too friendly. Gods are supposed to be *proud* (cant emphasize more) and must not care too much for their demigod children and here, Poseidon even _surrenders_ (S1 E8)to save his son who he met for like literally the first time. The Poseidon I know from the books would rather fight the war rather than surrendering. Plus, Zeus is too proud to talk to lowly demigods. In the books, Percy is absolutely terrified looking at him because HE. IS. A. FREAKING. GOD. Let alone roasting the god of the skies the first time you see him. Plus I can't imagine him sitting calmly after the deadline is over. Knowing the book Zeus, he would just fry them then and there without waiting for them to speak.
3. The lotus casino scene: It hit a bit too close to the movies and triggered a lot of trauma. And what in the world was Hermes doing there? And it was not exactly interesting and I had to force myself to sit through it.
4. Medusa: I mean, what the actual hell? Medusa. is. a. monster. Isn't she supposed to, you know, be an actual monster like in the books? And this supposed is the first time the legendary trio work together as a team and start knowing each other more. Instead, this one just focuses on Percy. Now that I think about that do all three of them ever work as a team?🤷♂️
5.When I finished the last episode, I prayed that the second season would be better than this. It was unbearably sad to see them slowly drift away from the Uncle Rick's actual storyline and character development into....wherever this is gonna end up.
I expected much more from the series but im disappointed now. It just feels like a Disney channel series I used to watch in primary school. I wouldn't complain if this was an original series, but after reading the books, this it just doesn't hit its mark. But I do have some hope that the net season may be a little better after the critique, plus there is a lot of potential and it isn't too late. But if they are gonna continue it the same way, then I believe this won't have a good future.
