Sure when a movie demands a bit of thought rather than the same old, same old Jason Voorhees Friday the 13th played out boring horror flick, the movie gets bad reviews.
It has a dark slow beginning by design. A completely narcissistic, out of touch with his kids, self centered rotten father. True to probably many families the older brother has an endearing sprit that nurtures his little sister thru hell to deal with an unthinkable situation. This slow beginning is absolutely necessary as the movie slowly drags you into horrific faster paced rhythm.
Bottom line, it is well thought out with loads of peeping thru the windows of a doll house coupling fantasy with reality that keeps you confused but guessing like a movie should do. This movie is reminessent of Ari Asters Hereditary definitely which left me craving more.
This is a movie getting bad ratings because the critics actually had to think out of the box to get it. If you like challenging cool horror flicks, this is a great movie. I am watching it again and the foreshadowing and symbolism is great. Watch it, it is worth it and different. Good luck.
