This is a very hard watch, be warned, it is triggering. Using a particular period of mass migration In 1953, it depicts the ugly, real, traumatic experiences of African Americans at the hands of whites then, historically, and now. The impact on the mental health of black Americans manifests itself as horror dramatically but is no match for the actual horrors of racism. Brilliantly written and filmed with excellent perfomances from the four lead players, especially the child actors.

Beautifully written and shot by Rupert Everett himself. It’s incredible how he achieved a remarkable performance as Oscar to top it off. The non linear and episodic structure keeps it interesting and the supporting cast are strong too. A remarkable debut and clearly a labour of love.
