JJ Abrams saved the Star Wars franchise, but only just. The Last Jedi was supposed to develop the themes set up by The Force Awakens. It did nothing of the sort. Everybody mucked about for over two hours and then the situation in the galaxy far far way was basically the same as in the beginning of the movie.
So this R.Johnson person laid waste to the story so much that in effect Episode IX had to be a sequel to TFA. Not only that, but Johnson had introduced things in TLJ that had to be explained away (a courtesy that Johnson did not grant TFA).
In the end Abrams had to squeeze too much stuff into TRoS for it to be a totally coherent and exciting movie. Nevertheless, nicely patched, JJ.
