This was a magnificent film, "beautifully" acted and filmed. And at least one man was redeemed. I did not understand why the very favorable review of Roger Ebert gave only 3.5 stars. Was I missing something? Are "melodramas" excluded from 5 stars? As a historian I am reluctant to talk too simply about progress but at least we have made some significant improvements in our insights into mental health. This film demonstrates some of the methods we have left behind.
