Now, i am reviewing this movie on ONE viewing only. Before i start, i would like to say that second viewings are always different! But, the initial reaction....
I thought it was good. Enjoyable to the point of, ive seen a good movie, with some action & some emotion, but nothing thats going to leave a lasting impact.
Rey's story arc was messy from the second installment. The Force Awakens was the perfect setup for the second and third movies, but unfortunately was plagued with sloppy writing and bad choices, which ultimately spat out Rise of Skywalker and left me feeling a bit cut short.
Not once in any three of the new movies, did i feel that Rey and Kylo had anything romantic. She went from hating him, to still hating him, to kissing him. Made no sense to me.
Finn, oh Finn. What could have been a fantastic Arc for a beloved character in my eyes, has been wasted. He is the sidekicks of all sidekicks, the Robin to Batman, the Ned to our Spiderman. He does nothing, we find out nothing new and it makes me very upset!
Rose takes a backseat after being set up in The Last Jedi. It seems so far, JJ was more focused on fixing mistakes and cancelling out Johnsons work, than rolling with a great story and actually making sense of something.
Poe was returned as a hero of sorts, after being an egotistical idiot in The Last Jedi. I liked this, still, we know very little about him.
Emperor Palpatine was shown from the very first minute. In fact, he is shown multiple times, talking and talking some more, then when he foes get down to business, he's killed with a couple of lightsabers and never seen again.
The Palpatine/Granddaughter twist was predictable, so no surprises there.
The action was not long enough, didnt have high enough stakes & ultimately fell flat because of this. I imagine and final fight, like ROTS, with Anakin and Obi-Wan. We did not get this unfortunately.
Overall, chatacters progression was messy, story was messy & it was more focused on fixing mistakes, rather than making a final Star Wars epic.
3/5 for me on first viewing.
Second viewing may change my opinion, as i wont be as expectant. Why shouldnt i be though? This is the FINAL Star Wars in the series since '77.
