I feel like this show has two big things working for and against it.
The show’s strength comes from everything Anna did and how she got away with it all. The pacing was so good, especially early on, and they did great at creating a romantic narrative of Anna. The point of the show is the same as the article — or the case — in America, somebody who everybody believes is already rich is deserving of the attention, money, and opportunity to become even more rich and successful. Somebody pretended to be that person, and got away with a slew of crimes because our society is just… dumb.
On the flip side, the show tries to create villains in order to get the audience to root for Anna, but given that many of these characters are real people — especially, Rachel — it feels very inappropriate to make them look bad. These real characters shouldn’t be painted as villains or sniveling fools just to sell a narrative. Rachel was the victim of a scam, and they try to cancel out her victim hood by yelling out “white privileged,” as if the same wouldn’t be ESPECIALLY true for MOST of characters in the show.
