One of the most beautiful books I have read. Makes you think about life and friendship and the meaning of it all. This book has become one of my top books of all time. It is not easy to read. This is not a book I would casually recommend to anyone. It is lush, It is harsh. It is more about suffering than joy, and it sucks the reader down into that grief like quicksand. It is vacant. There is extremely disturbing violence. More than anything, it is heartbreaking. This is the story of four college friends and roommates—Willem, Malcolm, JB, and Jude, through adulthood who struggle to find themselves in early adulthood but over time each will find their way. One of them battles secret demons that debilitate him emotionally and physically. It is a story about friendship; but, not ordinary friendship. An unparalleled friendship is so connected that without it one is not whole, but lost. The friendship that gives one breathe a reason.
This book takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions. It will make you cry, it will make you smile, and it will make you angry. You will have to put it down, not because it isn’t interesting, but because you will have to collect yourself before reading again. This book has so much detail on every page you become connected to the characters. You become the characters.
A Little Life will stay with me. Jude's story will stay with me. I am so blessed that I experienced this and discovered how beautiful such a sad story can be. Thanks to Hanya you are a true gem.
