There was too much smoking and drinking for my liking. I guess that was considered hip or cool in the late sixties, but for a modern reader it was ringing constant alarm bells; no wonder they were all depressed … they were all addicted to nicotine and alcohol.
The realistic conversations and the depictions of nature were lovely but not earth shattering.
And ultimately the protagonist was a disappointment inasmuch as he never really made a choice, rather he was seized with inactivity and just let fate decide for him. But maybe that was quite realistic too. In real life people don’t often make grand decisions but simply allow themselves to be swept along. So perhaps that was the moral of the story. 🤷♀️
