Movie Reviews
LEO
Impressive. Vijay excelled. Trisha as usual is impeccable. Both the children did well. Each cast played amazing roles- Sanjay Dutt, Arjun, and GVM. I wish the women in the film were given more prominent roles namely Trisha, Madonna and Priya. The villain in the chocolate scene is excellently played. Entry of Hyena, the house guard well done. Vijay and Trisha have come a long way.
Lokesh justified his direction.
However, not entirely a family-friendly movie. Excessive violence was surprising for Vijay movie to have it. Delightful for Vijay fans as he is seen in various roles as a son, brother, lover, husband, mentor, nephew, boss and friend.
Certain scenes of Vijay, as an ex thug were evident even after marriage- his enactment of innocence even when he wasn't, gas-lighting, father-son relationship, father-daughter relationship, lying without flinching to the police, a make-believe mark on his back, lying convincingly to his wife, over protectiveness to the daughter, open threat to his kid's friends, fake IDs, avoiding Arjun's queries, opening up only when he wanted too was very well depicted. Excellent nuances.
The protagonist and Antagonist overlapped. The narration of where each character is distinctly separated only in slightly thin lines is well penned. Present to the past to present well enacted. The hero isn't overly exalted and is portrayed as a normal person who is making changes. The climax - his confession- was a quick end, a clever ending leaving the audience and fans wanting more, thirsting for Leo 2.
The movie could have been shorter.
The setting was remarkable. A completely different environment than the norm. The location is refreshingly new compared to the usual Tamil movies.
Atlee's style is evident here but less impactful. The Umphh factor and suspense were slightly missing. The intensity of violence could have been split and shared with family or friendships too. Certain scenes remind me of Hollywood movies which is okay as cinema means improvisation and evolvement. At times not okay, as one wonders, where is the originality if everything is a cut and paste.
Anirudh's presence takes the movie to a Hollywood BGM. Well created and emulated. Songs stay in mind. Though some give no meaning/ mundane meaning, in a way it suits the scenario.
Hopefully, Lokesh's LCU is not depicting heroes in villainous roles, justifying their acts or change after which to be applauded. Excessive violence and various possible negative businesses/ involvement could have a very negative impact, especially on young minds.
Vikram 2 was very well selected and depicted without over-intensifying unjust activities or violence. It keeps the actor, acting and message clean and neat enough.
The Marvel Universe does the same in a more positive light. The leadership qualities of the heroes were prominent compared to their potentially hazardous negative role modelling. Something to be considered here. Media also means wide exposure for the next generations and the ones seeking refuge through heroes/media. Satisfying the demand-supply chain is one thing, ensuring the happiness of the masses is another, and benefits are okay, however, er cinema has a huge influence on people. I hope this is kept in mind in the future.
It's a 8/10
