Ugh. I'm a sucker for romance, but this was horrid - and I love Richard Gere and Winona and am totally pro age differences in romance, provided it's legal of course.
Gere gets his first date with Winona via lying to her, and is a pompous creep who just can't help but pursue Winona's character, as if he has no self-control to go after a daughter of a former lover who is dying. Everyone around him seems entertained by his creepiness, maybe even supportive of it, as they joke about him being desperate, that he shouldn't do it, but "that's just him" kind of reaction. I hate that he's so slimy as this character.
I'm totally cool with enjoying movies created in different eras with different social norms (i.e. slightly womanizing etc) but this is over the top. So predictable, so vapid, so yuck. The trees were pretty and I would die for Winona's sparkly shawl thing she wears over the white dress. Wish I could find it on Amazon. Other than that, this is a poorly written weird romance that elevates an older mans creep vibe. Shame on you Netflix for recommending this to me, you should know better.
