I read several reviews and almost decided not to see it because of them. Jaded reviewers missed several important points, in my opinion. It brought into focus a human's relationship with animals. It personifies what so many parents want their children to understand: That animals have feelings and are teachable. That those of us who love animals and respect their right to be treated with kindness and understanding is laudable. I read reviews that sneered at a so-called plot. Sorry, guys. You missed it.
From the squirrel who hated the human who shot him and from other creatures who had been sorely mistreated, each one learned through their experiences with each other that they could live among each other and forgive and understand those around them.
It was a very poignant plot.
I am very impressed with the group of people who chose to put their money and efforts into offering this world the opportunity to see the joy that some of us gain when we 'chat' with our animals. I appreciated the fact that after making it clear Doolittle spoke to each animal in it's own language, the audience was able to understand those conversations because they were translated into English.
