The live-action adaptation of One Piece from Netflix does not deserve any stars. If Google can issue 0 stars as reviews, people would 100% throw them left and right, and this show is no exception to that treatment.
The teaser and official trailers hyped FAKE fans so much that it tries to garner false positivity to promote the show. I understand Oda gave his regards and green light on how the adaptation will be, but this is a far cry from what the first season of One Piece was.
This is not close to being a shell of the former glory days of One Piece. Those episodes were more goofy, more comical, and more lively, and yet Netflix chose to go in a more serious direction to highlight the PROBLEMS and CHALLENGES each character will be. This is not One Piece but WannaBe Piece.
On a different note, the design team didn't want the characters to seem like COSPLAY... That's like an insult to all the fans out there who go out their way to portraying the character's essence... To represent what it means to be part of the Straw Hats.
To the NEW audience that this show is focusing on, best believe it's not worth your time to watch this show. If you end up picking up the anime or manga after the 8 hours wasted on this show, you will end up having more questions as to why Netflix didn't go for 1:1 adaptation. If you have a hard time believing my words, then I highly suggest you pick up the anime or manga first before watching this show.
To the OLD audience that One Piece has, if you are true fans, you will agree to how much this show is not One Piece at all. Let alone try to envision where the show will go after the last episode and onwards. There will be no nostalgia per new character met by the team. There will be no memories formed for each of the fights they share, because every thing will have a very serious note. There will be no looking forward to how meaningful each crewmate joins the team, because Netflix would rather focus more on appropriating culture and color into the masterpiece rather than honoring it every step of the way.
With that said, I leave this review not as an actual review, but as 2 things: a warning and a prediction.
To anyone who wants to pick up this show, please don't. And if you end up doing it, please watch the anime or better yet, read the manga first and fully immersing yourself into how Oda created such a masterpiece. You can watch the anime on Crunchyroll or read the manga by either purchasing it digitally or physically online. Otherwise, there are other ways that require little to no payments to access them. If you know what I mean, then you know what I mean.
Despite the POSITIVE reviews that people are leaving every time they finish the first season of Netflix's WannaBe Piece, this show's hype will eventually peak and leave the viewers expecting more on the 2nd season. So, in my honest opinion, this show will not last long. It's existence alone is worthy of praise, but that is it. If they continue to pave the way to future seasons, it will be their downfall and theirs alone.
