Visually oppulant but historically inaccurate
I saw the movie last night for the curiosity of finding what the fuss is all about? First if all I would like to say tha film is lavish in every aspect from costumes to sets to casting everything looks grand every where. Bhansali films are like that only and with every film he is just getting more and more grand.
The actors have performed brilliantly. Shahid looks like the the godly Hindu king and his queen is also truly gorgeous while we get to see her a little because she is heavily covered all the time with lehnga and jewellery. But any how, in some scenes Deepika performs brilliantly. Ranveer slays as the ruthless khilji, he has given a very heavy weight performance as a villain who is madly self obsessed and brutal and thinks only about himself and his wants. He is so cold hearted that he doesn't even shy away from killing the family. If you're a GOT fan he would remind you of Khao drogo a lot and director has also given him attires and rusty colours like that only and behavior and mannarisms are also stickingly similar but nevertheless, ranveer performs brilliantly. He makes an impact in the movie.
While I am not a historian I found it interesting to know the history of it and found some in accuracies which were probably constructed in the name of liberty of cinema. The final battle in which ratan singh loses his life was actually never fought between khilji and ratan singh. It was another king by the name of devpal who was also smitten by padmavati that he tried to aquire her and The battle between ratan singh and him where both lose their life. And finding this opportunity khilji attacks the chittorgarh and then all the events took place. If I am able to find out inaccuracies in the movie I guess historians are somehow correct in their view of moulded facts that are shown in the movie. I am not supporting any one because violence is not a solution I am just pointing out the inaccuracies.
So final verdict is, yes you can go and watch the movie to enjoy spectacle and great performances, if not more then you would definitely enjoy it for the first time. Jauhar scene will give you chills.
3/5 stars.
