I thought it was really good. I know a non verbal autistic child like Music in this movie, and I thought it was a really accurate depiction of what they can be like sometimes. They’re not always like this and most high functioning autistic people don’t have episodes that are this severe. So it definitely doesn’t represent all autistic people, but it shows what it can be like sometimes. I thought the movie tackled a lot of difficult subjects from real life, things that people don’t like to face, and it did so in a really good way. Some people are saying they were offended by it and maybe they don’t know anyone who is a non verbal autistic person. I wasn’t offended at all. I thought it was very sweet. The main character learned how to understand and help Music as she herself (Zu) grew as a person. In that aspect it also showed how people on the outside who meet an autistic person for the first time can misinterpret what autistic people are saying and doing. To summarize how Music develops as a character; she goes from being almost completely non verbal to being able to say a few short sentences that aren’t scripting or memorized phrases. She’s able to exist more in the moment and still gets overwhelmed but she’s learning how to self regulate when dealing with change. It’s really sweet.
