As someone who’s been a Tomb Raider fan since I was seven, it’s tough to see the changes the franchise has gone through. Lara Croft has always been an iconic character for me—strong, independent, and resilient. She inspired a sense of confidence and adventure. However, in recent iterations, she doesn’t feel like the same character I grew up with. It seems like she’s become more reliant on others, which feels like a departure from the fierce, self-reliant Lara we used to know.
I appreciate the need to evolve and reach new audiences, but some of the changes, like the redesign of Zip, felt a bit forced. I’m all for diversity and inclusion, but sometimes it feels like characters are being altered in ways that don’t really serve the story. It left me a little confused about the direction they’re trying to take.
What I’ve always loved about Tomb Raider was the perfect balance of fun gameplay, challenging puzzles, and an empowered heroine at the center of it all. Lately, it feels like the series has lost that balance. It’s hard to watch a franchise that meant so much to me move in a direction that doesn’t resonate as much anymore.
That said, I have to give credit where it’s due—Hayley Atwell’s voice performance was excellent, especially in the moments where Lara’s wit and sass came through. I’d love to hear her voice more of Lara’s classic era moments if that ever happens. For long-time fans like myself, though, the franchise feels like it’s straying a bit too far from its roots.
