This review is long and goes a bit off-topic at the end, but please read it fully.
I just finished re-reading this novel again and it is absolutely wonderful. Especially for an author’s first work. The adventure that Parzival takes in the OASIS is stunning and is very intricate. As a puzzle lover, it excited me to go through this maze of riddles with him. His adventure as Wade in the real world and his relationships were just as exciting. While I don’t understand all the references, it is cool to see it all packed in this book.
I like this representation of the future because it accurately portrays most humans neglecting their duty to protect the world and the new order that has taken place due to it. A couple people have said that they don’t like Wade not believing in G-d and not liking this new future and it made them angry at the author. While everyone is entitled to their opinion and should be respected, coming from someone who is not atheist, I believe Wade is justified in that opinion in the future. Nothing bad badness has come from the world in the future due to the problems and that he has to escape the real world to have an ounce of happiness. It shows as a warning of the results that will happen if we do not clean up our act now. We all want a better world, but wanting and doing something is different, so we should all focus on doing our part no matter how big or small. For me, I am researching more biology to help find theoretical cures to certain diseases (not Covid-19, but my hearts go out to everyone suffering). It shows we all have to take responsibility now more than ever. While that is an overused statement, it’s the truth so if you’re reading this, please sit down now and think of ways to better the world. Also sit down and read this book, it’s amazing, bye!
