Like real life, this movie family has its ups and downs, but no real resolution...life just “goes on”. I like that it appeared the older brother, George (spoiler alert here), appeared as if he was going to get sucked back in to the family dynamic, and not want to go back to his “new” life in Chicago, but after Johnny inexplicably hits him, he can’t wait to get out of the old life in the small town. Melanie is having some problems processing these changes in her husband. Also, I think it’s significant that the only theme Melanie identifies in Huckleberry Finn is “escape”. Escape is a major, but unstated, theme in this movie.
