Based on true events ... this is not a docudrama, a depiction or even an explanation of what really happened. Please do not see this film if that's what you expect. You'll likely dismiss it as unrealistic, just women talking and yes you'll have completely missed the point. If you are prepared to see a film that is "a work of female imagination" ... the opening line from the film, also taken directly from the novel it is based on, you can expect a profound exploration of women's responses to being abused and silenced.
