You almost need to take notes to keep all of these characters straight. Now, before you jump in on the reality that the American public's attention span is shorter than ever....be mindful that I am an Aaron Sorkin and Michael Crighton fan...and their attention to detail defines them. This movie seems to be intent of making us disgusted with ourselves. We are animals, we are survivalists, we are selfish, uncaring...and this includes the American Indians. Tons of reviews praise the cinematography, and I concur. But I am looking for character development. I would like to learn more about the characters, how they feel, why they react the way they do and say what they say. I do not feel like I know any of the characters...including Costner's character. It feels like this is on purpose...like we are being told we will have to sit through twelve hours before we learn about anyone...like a penance. There are multiple series of Yellowstone....and all of them develop the characters in depth and all of them do so against the backdrop of a beautifully wild wild west. If I get through this once....I cannot see watching it again. It would simply be too painful.
