I was surprised that critics seem to have universally panned this movie, because I found it beautiful and profound. There is a scene where Abby, one of the main characters, talks about how her professors disliked her graduate thesis for many of the same reasons that the critics disliked this film. Too poetic? Out of touch with our own times? Unreliable narrators who attempt to tell life stories? I think the director/writer was fully aware that to some, this film could seem maudlin and sentimental. But he took a risk and told this story, just as his character, Abby, did in writing her dissertation. And I agree with many of the audience reviewers who also feel this film is an overlooked gem.
