I was trying to decide what to watch on Netflix and came across The Gentleman. I read the byline. I love Mathew McConaughey and Colin Farrell and I love a gangster story so automatically pressed play. I was so shocked to see Hugh Grant playing against type. I started thinking “someone’s trying to do a Guy Ritchie kinda movie”🤣🤣🤣 But as I got into the story it became it could only be the one and only Guy Ritchie. Superb cast, script, action and cinematography. Being a South London gal. I just love the way Guy captures London with these wonderful characters, even if they are stereotypical. Ritchie’s experience and maturity come together for a polished mainstream production. This is exemplified by the A listers in the cast. Which is a bit of a shame, but there is an equal balance of talent and there is no weak link. Be warned Ritchie uses the ‘C’ in the same proportions that Tarantino loves to use the ‘N’ word (hate that) But with Ritchie the use seems a bit more authentic and in context, However, race is insulted in one way or another, and racist slur against the black boxer had me shook for a moment. I could not believe what I was hearing, but again can’t deny it gets said. Also In for a racial kicking are Jewish, Chinese, Irish and traveller characters. Overrall, a signature Guy Ritchie movie, with all the familiar conventions that can be watched and enjoyed all with his other gangster classics of Snatch and Lockstock.
