There are a handful of movies and books that should be required consumption by all humans. Schindler's List, Twelve Years a Slave, and American Dirt among them. This book moved my soul.

The first half had me desperately anguished and the second half heart broken. When I learned this book falls in the category of historical fiction I had no words at all. This book is beautifully written with narration through the voice of a child growing up in Appalachia. Often humorous, often painful, always honest. It's left me with a book hangover that will linger long after I've chosen another.
