It is not impossible to adapt a novel to the screen. The Tannie Maria series based on "Recipes for Love and Murder" very closely follows the book by Sally Andrew. It can be done. This series, by the way has the main character ( Tannie Maria) portrayed by a NOT thin woman of middle age. It is wonderful and made me want to read the books ( there are 4 books). Reading "Recipes for Love and Murder" was like seeing the series over..only minor deviations between the two. ( this series is on Acorn). Watching the Three Pines series has been a let down. The two most recent episodes, 3&4, was so far off that it was like watching a different story altogether with a title that doesn't fit and a few scenes from different books thrown in to appease devoted readers. Honestly, if I had never read the Louise Penny books, this series would not motivate me to do so. If I had not read the books the characters would not make much sense. So much was changed that is fundamental in the following books, I cannot see how those stories could be told in the series at all. Making Three Pines was a phenomenal opportunity...and in my opinion, it was squandered.
