My initial expectation of this movie was “omg this is going to be so stupid”. However, this is not your typical childrens’ film. I found myself pleasantly entertained by the masterful satire of our current society. It is equally serious as it is ridiculous, and the humour is subtle, witty, and nuanced. Several tongue-in-cheek gags give this film just enough shock value to keep it interesting and fun for the adults while still being keen enough to go over the kids’ heads.
The plot follows barbie on a misadventure to reality to find the girl that is playing with her. Ken tags along as a stowaway and is affected by his experiences, which he cannot wait to implement back in barbieland. He goes back without Barbie, and when barbie returns with her people, she finds a vastly different barbieland, one which must be repaired immediately before it’s lost to an alternate reality forever.
